From zooming in to seeing clearly: Jeremy’s Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) journey

Jeremy is 49 years old, lives in Lisbon, and recently underwent a Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) procedure at CPO. In this interview, he shares what led him to seek treatment, what his vision was like before surgery, and how his life has changed since then.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the procedure you underwent?

My name is Jeremy, I’m 49 years old and I live here in Lisbon. The procedure I underwent was the RLE procedure.

How did you hear about CPO?

I was referred by a medical concierge service called Serenity. They help expats navigate medical care in Portugal. I sought care because I wanted to explore alternatives to wearing glasses.

How was your vision before the surgery?

My vision before the surgery wasn’t very good. I struggled to read fine print. If I needed to read a label on a bottle or a product, I had to take a photo and zoom in to see what it said.

I didn’t like wearing glasses, so I often didn’t bring them with me, and that caused problems. For example, at restaurants I had to use a magnifying app on my phone to read the menu. It took me much longer to decide what to order, while everyone else had already finished, and that was embarrassing.

How was your diagnosis consultation?

I came in for a consultation and had standard eye exams, as it had been over a year since my last check-up. I already knew that I wanted to stop wearing glasses, if possible.

I explained this, and it was mentioned that I could be a possible candidate for the RLE procedure. The process was explained to me, and I was told that further tests were needed to confirm whether it was suitable. I then scheduled a follow-up appointment for those additional tests.

How did you feel on the day of the surgery?

The day of the surgery was a mix of excitement and anxiety. I was excited about the future of not wearing glasses and being able to see clearly, but I’m generally afraid of surgery, so it was a combination of both feelings.

How were you received by the CPO team?

Everything was very well organised from the moment I walked in until I was discharged. The team was very caring. They greeted me when I arrived, already knew who I was and were expecting me. I felt very welcomed.

Did you feel any pain during the surgery?

There was some discomfort because you can’t blink and the eye is held open, which feels uncomfortable. However, I didn’t feel any pain, and the procedure went by very quickly. Afterwards, I realised it was much easier than I expected.

Did anything surprise you?

The main surprise was how fast it was. I expected it to take much longer, but it was over very quickly.

How was your recovery process?

After the surgery, I had help getting home because I couldn’t drive. I needed to use several different eye drops. Some caused mild irritation for the first minute or so, but after that there were no issues.

I went about my normal day, just carrying the eye drops with me and using them when needed. The recovery process was very simple and painless.

When did you notice improvements in your vision?

I noticed improvements by the next day. It was almost immediate and quite incredible.

What changed in your life after the surgery?

The biggest change is that I can now read without using a magnifying app. I can do things more quickly because I’m no longer struggling to read instructions, menus or work-related manuals. Everything feels more efficient now.

How did you feel once your vision was restored?

I felt more confident. I didn’t like carrying glasses or feeling dependent on them. I sometimes felt embarrassed pulling them out when others didn’t need them. Now I feel more confident and more carefree.

Would you recommend CPO? Why?

Yes, I definitely recommend CPO. I’ve already recommended it to my aunt, who also lives in Lisbon. The team is professional, kind, and I trust them with my eyes.

What would you say to someone who is unsure about this procedure?

If you’re hesitant, try not to be afraid. Go for a consultation and share your concerns so they can be addressed. The sooner you have the surgery, the more time you’ll have to enjoy the results.
