Pulsed Light - Dry Eye 1

Pulsed Light Treatment for Dry Eye

Are you tired of dealing with the constant discomfort of dry eyes? Have you been diagnosed with blepharitis? Do you use eye drops/lubricants to relieve your symptoms?

The treatment of dry eye with pulsed light, available at CPO, is present in 50 countries and is one of the main treatments related to meibomian gland dysfunction, with more than 250,000 patients treated and dozens of scientific studies published.

Dry Eye Disease is a common pathology that affects between 5 and 15% of the population, with a prevalence that is linked to age and modern living conditions. This condition occurs when there is excessive evaporation or the quantity/quality of tears is insufficient to lubricate the ocular surface. Tears are necessary to maintain a healthy ocular surface. The evaporative form of this pathology accounts for 80% of patients affected by dry eye. In this case, the disease is mainly attributed to a deficiency in the outer lipid layer of the tear film, secreted by the meibomian glands.

If you have the following activities:

  • Prolonged use of electronic devices;
  • Long reading;
  • He watches TV and goes to the movies;
  • Working in environments with dust or other particles in the air;

If yes and you have the following symptoms:

  • Feeling of sand in the eyes;
  • Eye burning;
  • Excessive tearing;
  • Stings in the eyes;

Make an appointment at CPO - Clínica Privada de Oftalmologia and talk to your doctor to find out if this treatment is right for you.

What does dry eye treatment with Pulsed Light consist of?

E-Eye is a non-invasive way of treating dry eye. The device emits a "cold light" that stimulates the meibomian glands in complete safety. In response to this stimulus, the glands resume secretion of the tear film. This cold light aims to stimulate the glands to produce the outer lipid layer of the tear film again, which is responsible for preventing excessive evaporation of tears. The normal structure of the tear film is restored and the symptoms associated with Dry Eye disappear.

Results:

  • Increased vision disorders,
  • Burning or foreign body sensation in the eye.
  • If the process accelerates, the discomfort becomes permanent, resulting in excessive tearing. As such, people with Dry Eye Disease may paradoxically have excess tear production.

Problems they generate:

  • Anatomical changes can occur, including atrophy of the meibomian gland orifices, punctuated by episodes of infection: styes, cysts, secondary conjunctival infections and, in the most severe cases, micro-ulceration of the corneal epithelium.

Treatment protocol:

The effectiveness of the treatment will depend on the application of a specific protocol. This protocol involves 3 sessions, administered over the following schedule:

Day 0 / Day 15 / Day 45 / Day 75 (optional)

Additional sessions can be scheduled to consolidate and maintain the clinical benefits achieved.

Before the session:

  • After you have carefully read the informed consent about the treatment, you will fill in a questionnaire to be given to the doctor.
  • Make sure there are no cosmetic products on the skin below the eyes (flash zone).

During the session:

  • The session lasts just five minutes.
  • You will be sitting comfortably in a treatment chair.
  • The eye protectors will be positioned for your eyes.
  • A specific hydrogel is applied to the cheekbone and temporal area.
  • The same process is repeated on the other eye.
  • The doctor removes the remaining gel and cleanses your skin.

After the session:

  • No other treatment should be applied to the areas that have received flash treatment throughout the entire circle of sessions.
  • The treated area should be covered with sunglasses and sunscreen should be applied to the area in case of exposure to ultraviolet rays.
  • Conventional eye hygiene procedures can be continued.

Results

Rapid improvement and measurable effectiveness

The stimulation of the E-Eye induces the restoration of the normal function of the meibomian glands. The effects achieved appear very quickly after each session, and their persistence over time usually increases with the number of sessions carried out.

Clinical studies have been conducted in Europe, New Zealand and China and have shown that:

  • There was a considerable improvement in the symptoms perceived by the patients;
  • There is a correlation between this perception and the clinical measures carried out.

Long-lasting results:

Treatment with E-Eye provides long-lasting results, with significant improvement in dry eye symptoms for at least 6 months. In 60% of cases, the effect lasts more than a year, and up to three years. A single regular maintenance session is recommended if necessary, usually once a year:

  • 96% of patients recommend it;
  • 83% of patients confirm that their symptoms have improved;
  • 55% stop using eye drops after treatment.

Summary of Statistics E-Eye:

  • Pioneering treatment technology for dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
  • By 2020, more than 250,000 patients had been treated with E-Eye!
  • 85% patient satisfaction, proven efficacy in mild, medium and severe dry eye. 1
  • Several clinical studies have been carried out confirming the efficacy of E-Eye treatment technology and the improvement of dry eye conditions. 2
  • Clinical studies and questionnaires with users and patients confirm the high level of satisfaction with the treatment. 3
  • Up to 3 years of long-term relief for the patient.
